Share Portal displays small file icons for recognised file types (i.e. .doc, .xls, .xml etc) in a Document Library. For files it does not recognise (i.e. .CAB) it just shows the standard Windows "I don't know what this file is" icon.

I've tried adding the CAB file to the list of recognised files in folder options on the Share Portal web server, and then assigning an icon to it, but this icon does not then get displayed in the document library.

How do I get Share Portal to display the icons of files it doesn't initially recognise?

I am not certain it is the same in SPS..but in WSS 3.0 it is done like this...

1. Obtain a jpg for the file type you are interested in mapping

2. Copy the jpg to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\IMAGES

3. Open the Docicon.xml file in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\XML

4. Add a line for the extension in question (i.e. <Mapping Key="pdf" Value="pdficon16.gif"/>). If you want to display a document menu option of "Open With xxx", add the attributes

EditText="xxx" OpenControl="SharePoint.OpenDocuments" after the Value attribute. Note that the user will need xxx installed to actually perform the edit.

5. Save the xml file

6. Restart all SharePoint services

7. Restart IIS

Thanks very much for this - it's something that has bugged me for months!
