I'm trying to build a localized domain which includes 2 Win 2003 R2 STD edition as well as a application PC running XP Pro. Active Dir is installed on the DCs (2) running Win 2003 R2 STD.

We need to incorporate and SQL server running small business server 2003 R2 into the existing domain. We currently have 5 workstations running XP Pro on the Domain.

As per Documentation it states AD must be the root Forrest. Does the DC run Win 2003 Small Business Server?

The Documentation also states that only one computer in the Domain can be running Win SBS 2003 R2. Does this mean that the server that runs SBS 2003 R2 has to be the DC as well as the SQL Server?

How can we incorporate SBS 2003 in the above detailed scenario?

SBS is meant for small businesses and it's also meant to be used as the first server on the domain. While there is documentation for placing SBS into an existing domain, I STRONGLY CAUTION YOU - doing so can cause problems with SBS's reliability. Further, you need CALs. One for every user or device (depending on how you choose to license). Now the good thing is that the CALs cover access to ALL servers on the network for all clients... the bad news is, your existing CALs are now essentially a waste of money.

SBS MUST be the FSMO master DC in the domain. When you install it, you have a SMALL grace period - 1 to 2 weeks - before the server will start rebooting itself hourly if you haven't, by then, made it your FSMO master DC.

The one other option is to go buy the transition pack which will remove all the restrictions - but will also cost you at least $1000.
