small boxes instead of text in a word file

Potential problems:
1. Select all (ctrl-a) and change the font to Times New Roman or Arial. Especially if you created it on one PC and moved it to another, or if you have deleted/uninstalled some fonts.
2. When you opened the file, did you use "recover text from any file" by chance? Make sure when you open it, the files of type is Word documents.
