Slow VPN Speeds

I have a user who sometimes works from home via her Satellite internet connection (she lives in the sticks and satellite and dial-up are her only options.). She says her internet connection on her laptop is fine for what she has but when she tries to VPN to our company domain she says the connection speed is very very slow with timed out connections happening all the time. I believe one she has a VPN connection she is also remoting directly into to her office server.

My co-worker says with all of the security VPN has connecting via a slow connection like satellite this is to be expected.

Is there anything else I need to look for or do to help this user out, or is the unfortunate truth that she is stuck with a super slow connection?

A little knowledge is dangerous.

Satellite links are know to have very long round trip times (try a ping and look at response time!)
RTT has a very bad impact on interactive applications...
(so if this is what she's doing she will see very bad performance)

You also need to check the MTU size. If at some point in the link a packet needs to be fragmented because with the added overhead of the encryption the size of the packet > MTU it will also affect performance in a negative way.
Most professional VPN clients have some way of setting packet size in order to be < MTU

Just some ideas to start looking...
