HI,

I have been using ACT 6.0 for multiple years on a network with 4 computers. The server is a xp pro with peer to peer sharing the act database; i added one more computer [xp home] which sees the network and sees the database. The computer is MUCH faster with dual core 3600 amd [better than other computers on the network].

When i load act on the new computer, it takes 15-20 sec to load up the database and show the cotact info. NOne of the other computers have this delay. Interestingly, the delay disappears if I reboot the xp pro server and act loads up immediately with contact info on the new computer.

I can not figure out why the database would load so slowly on the new computer unless the server is rebooted in which case it works fine for some time and then back to being a turtle again?

I was looking to see if there is a good program to run to determine what is happening between the server-new computer network connection that may cause this [and problem would disappear with a reboot of server!]; is there a good reasonable priced program that can continuously monitor this connection and detgermine what is killing or slowing acts connection?

Any other suggestions as to what could be causing this?

thanks for any advice
Tom

Thank you for your help. The problem was that multiple people were logging in as the same user; its surprising that this was working fine until we added one more computer and then things really slowed down. Anyway, having one more login resolved the problem.

Now, we are having another problem; when starting ACT email, the server is quick; all networked workstations [running xp pro or xp home] take about 10-12 seconds to just bring up the act email client and another 10-15 sec to check or send a single email; any idea why email connection from workstations would be so slow on ACT 6.0

thnx in advance for any comments.
Tom

I'd use a different user name for each user... sharing user names can cause file locking errors

What email system are you using in ACT!?
If Internet Mail, is the email store also on the server?
Is it still slow if you try opening a local database?

Hi,

Using Internet Mail on all machines including the server;
server running windows xp pro; another 7 machines with xp pro/home combination running as workstations. Using act 6.0.3

In preferences, general preferences for email default is set to local directory for all machines; when I click on email preferences, again i get the 10-15sec delay before accessing pref; attachments are set not to be saved; but directory is also set to local machine.

All workstations act the same way being very slow; the server where the database is local works fine with the email with no delays.

I figured the workstations must be looking somewhere through the network when i do any email activity because of the delay but cn't figure out where as i have tried to make sure all email setttins are set to local on the workstations. Also, tried using outlook as the email prog with act and had the same results of slow startup on all workstations but fine spped on the server w local database.

Is there any other settings to make sure email does not need to access the server and can just send mail locally?

thnx
Tom

1. Try a different local database (eg the Demo) on a workstation to see if it's different
2. Try turnong off your anti-virus (just to test) on a workstation and see if it's different
3. Minimise the number of items in the Inbox (move to another folder if you want to keep them)
4. Have a look at these Knowledge Base Article IDs on act.com - 10637, 13288, 12942, 10597

Thnx for your info.

1. Using a local database on the workstations works fine and brings up email client immediately w/ no delays.

2. Stopping antiviurs has no effect. [using nod32]
3. there are no messages in the inbox as this is a new attempt to use email funciton
4. I reviewed the knowledgebase which i had reviewed for my networking issue for same user logging on before; i have minimized access to the network with actdig; emails are set to local folder.

Is there anywhere else where there are ooptions for act to access the network when email is being activated besides the preferences for local attachements and default directory?

thnx
Tom

Did you check all the KB articles - like swap file on the server, etc?

Try the demo database on the server... see if it's database specific or the network

Did a lot of testing;

Using the sample database from act on server and connecrting with workstations works fine [this is a small datablse].

Copied the problem database to the local workstation; email works great. When workstation connects to server for the same database, email takes 20-30 seconds to start.

If i delete most of the meetings [about 10,000 meetings with 3000 contacts], connection time across the network for using email drops to 5 seconds [vs ~30 sec]; so it looks like when i activate email, the workstations slows down because of all the meetings setup in the database. This seems illogical as it makes email not very usefule for workstations when the database gets even slightly large.

Any suggestions?

Is version 2006 or 2007 any better; i tried 2007 trial on a single computer with pentium dual core 2.8 with 2 gigs of ram and it was woefully slow.

thnx
Tom

Why do you have so many activities in the database?
Have you tried removing the cleared activites with ACTDIAG?
Have you done a Compress/Reindex?

Yes, ACT! 8/9 is faster with large databases. It can be slow if you have a small swap file or a slow hdd
