Slow Response from Remote PCs

I am currently installing a Windows 2000 Server onto an existing Novell network. The Windows 2000 Server will be the domain controller. All pcs will be Windows 2000 clients.

Problem:
Two of the pcs are remote. They log into the current Novell system to gain access to a flat file database program. This process is extremely slow. They gain access by using a Fractal T1, (256k).

Question:
How can we get faster access with the remote pcs. (It takes approximately 8 to 10 minutes before the first screen appears.)
