I have a table in Word 2003 with 6 columns and about 400 rows. Each cell has about 100-500 characters. When I want add/change something in one of the cells, it takes 5-10 seconds for a response. I checked the FAQ's and searched for help but couldn't find any. Is there anything I can do to speed things up, or is the table just too big?

Thanks,

Brian

Sounds like the size of the table in Word is slowing things down. If you used Access or Excel for changing/modifying the data, and then just take what you need from the data, and then only export what you need to Word for publishing, that'd probably work better - if possible in your situation.

Or maybe restructure the text so it is NOT in a table. That would speed things up. Overall, I would say the table is too big.

If you are manually going through the table, and adding/changing text in a cell, then yup, depending on how much is changed, Word is going to have to repaginate. Word repaginates plain text much faster than it does tables.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll use Excel.

Hi BrianLe,

If automatic column widths are enabled for a Word table, the constant re-calculation of the column widths as you perform any text editing will slow Word down.

macropod, please explain more about "automatic column widths". Is it prevented by choosing 'Table Properties' and setting definite column widths?

Hi Madawc,

It's the 'Automatically resize to fit contents' option, found under Table|Table Properties|Options.
