Slow "Accessing Database" Crystal XI and Progress db

I create reports for clients using Crystal 10 and XI against a Progress db, usually 10.1b or 10.1d.

The report has between 3 and 5 subreports. I have noticed within the last few months that all of these reports are running much more slowly.

Does anyone know if recent updates to Crystal have embedded calls to the BusinessObjects site during the initialization of the "Accessing Database" phase? We noticed in one client location that, if we shut down internet access, the report ran quickly, the way it used to.

All reports reside on the internal file server which also contains the Progress db. Users run the reports either by running Crystal Developer on the own desktops or by running Crystal Viewer on their desktops.

I ran CR off of a Progress DB and had nothing but problems. We eventually set up a datawarehouse and everything is fine now. I'm surprised your DB users have not complained that they slowed during report running periods. Our's did. I don't know about embedded calls to a site, but if you can get CR off of the live Progress Data, you'll be ahead of the game. The other thing i would check is the necessity of all those subreports. See if you can re-write your reports without them, using Variables, arrays and the like. Each time a subreport executes, it is another entire report running. Also, the more data you pull, the more CR/Progress slows. If you are pulling YTD transactions, you'll slow signicantly as the year comes to a close.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't mention that I am accessing sql views of the progress db. Unfortunately, I can't eliminate the subreports at this time. We are working on a solution that will extract data from the Progress db and place in a file that I can write against. That will help.

I haven't worked with arrays much, but your suggestion is worth looking into.

Thanks,
L
