Slow print time

Here is my problem.
I have the need to print a 1 page report that is a tie together of a main report and 3 subreports.
The queries behind the report all use SQL7 ODBC linked databases except for the main form which uses the data table the user just updated on their screen.
All queries behind the report and subreports have a reference to the main form on the screen to be sure they select data referencing what is being updated on the screen.
I have also tried using the parent/child link fields on the report design to no success.
I can shrink the screen form and run each of the 4 queries separately and they run in the snap of a finger, but together it takes nearly 45 seconds to generate the 1 page report.
The time delay appears to be during generation time. Once the small popup window says it is printing page 1 of 1 the process is done and the page comes out.
The printer is an HP4050 direct wired to the PC(no network used).
The final wrinkle is that occasionally, through no pattern, for about an hour the prints will take only 2 seconds.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
