Hello,

we have some serious issues with Brightstore 10.5
We have 2 file/print servers (W2K SP4) which we backup with Brightstore Enterprise Backup 10.5.
Everytime the throughput is extremely low (between 100-200 MB/m).
We've tried all sorts of things, change blocksize, disable virusscanner (Mcafee) etc., but everytime the speed is low.
If we backup, on the same tape-drive, an sql database-server, the speeds go up till 1500 MB/min, so we can say that the hardware is ok ?

What can we do to improve the backup-speed (or restore-speed)
(total backup of 1 server is appr. 270 GB, the other is 200 GB)

Tape-robot : Compaq MSL 5000

Thanx a lot..

Disable the device in Device manager that way we are sure that we aren't using any of those Windows Drives

Is the firmware up to what CA certified device list suggests?

The firmware is up to date according to CA.
But if we disable the windows part, will ca still work woth it?
We have situation : Server(s) --> DataStorageRouter --> Tape-unit.

of coz it works since ca uses its own driver.

besides, u can increase the client agent backup priority in agent admin GUI.

If the problem is just with that one target, then focus the attention to that system. Performance monitor is the standard tool to use. One thing that I have seen a number of times is the NIC sharing an IRQ with something else.

IRQ is not an issue, already searched fot that.
But isn't it normal that a backup is taking longer if there are thousands of little files instead of 1 big file ??

Cause the sql server gets 1500k/s with a single database file.

Yes lots of small files will take longer than one large, the more and smaller the files the longer it will take.

If you are using a SAN and the Tape Library is local to the backup server then try the image option.

It by passes the OS and does block level backup..so the overhead in backing up small files is taken away.

You can select volume level backup but file scan for individual file restore.

You will find your tape streaming fast!!!

Another note is that the image option install will require a reboot.

You should also take a look at This patch fixes a problem where backups are extremely slow if you are using the "log all activity" option and you are backing up many small files.

If you are not using "log all activity" this fix will not help. The image option is definitely the way to go for small files.

The option "log all activity" is not set.
We will try the image option.

Back to fundamentals, make sure your target server is connected at 100Mb Full Duplex (with switch port forced as well). Also, the system driver is always slow as mentioned due to too many small files. Use lots of filters to get rid of user.dmp, memory.dmp etc (dump files for system crashes)

Well...problem solved.
Since a new driver update with Compaq Supportpack the performance is perfect.
Thanx all for the help
