Howdy All -

Windows 2008 Standard Edition - 64-bit
2.6 quad core intel CPU
4gb RAM
4 x 15,000 SAS drives in RAID-5

This machine is 100% dedicated as a file server, I might make it a Terminal Server Licensing manager but not quite there yet. Some users are reporting slow file access to shared files that they access through mapped drives which they did not experience on my Windows 2003 server. I've noticed this a little bit myself that network files seem to be a little slow.

CPU is staying less than 5% and physical memory usage is at 30%.

The server is using one of the two nics in the server connected to a gb switch on a gb switch port and according to the switch port status, running in full duplex.

The only thing that is standing out to me as possibly being wrong is my Symantec AV (corp) seems to be running as a 32bit process instead of a 64 bit process which I'm going to check which version I have installed and reinstall with a 64bit client tonight (just to make sure).

The machine does have two nics, right now I just have one in use with a static IP address. I can plug in the 2nd one but do I bridge the two so that the two nics have one? same switch, separate switches?

Any thoughts, suggestions, or diagnostic checks would be useful!

If you plug them both into the same switch, you'll need to look into "teaming" them together to make one virtual network card. There may also be some configuration to do on the switch itself depending on which "team" you chose to implement.

As far as the server actually running slow, you might want to crack open performance monitor and add counters for your network card and disk to see which part of the server is actually being slow if it's even the server itself.

Baddos -

I think I found the problem - AntiVirus autoscanning on file access seems to be the trigger. The AV process if I turn on auto-protect starts consuming all the available. I'm kind of debating if I need to start shopping my AV solution as the tech support desk was/is no help and is not sure when a true 2008 and 64bit solution will be available.
