I was wondering if someone can help me out. On one of our servers, any outbound ssh connections to other hosts take anywhere from 30-60 seconds before getting the connection into the other machine, yet when you ssh into this same machine from any other machine, the connection is instantaneous. The machine in question is running openssh 3.8.

Any ideas ?

It must be something wrong with the DNS!

Check traceroute host

I agree with khalidaaa, it must be something wrong with the DNS configuration on your AIX box.

As a quick troubleshooting method, try temporarily removing your etc/resolv.conf file to see if that makes any improvement for you.

I fixed the problem. It wasn't a dns issue. I upgraded the openssh packages to 4.3.0.5300 (on the 5.3 expansion cd) and now connections out are as fast as those in.

thanks for the suggestions though!
