slow opening MS Access tables

I'm sure there are many reasons for this, but will some one tell me some of the possible causes?

I'm using CR 8.5 on a remote desktop connection. The files are MS access 2003, some are on the same server, some are on different ones. The problem is both with opening the .mdb to see the tables and selecting the tables. The larger files are usually worse, but sometimes a smaller one will open slow as well. By slow I mean 3-5 minites (adding a table or selecting them for new report). I also report from a paradox database but it's tables open right away.

When I had that problem at a remote location it was due to low bandwidth so everything was slow. Could be the speed and size of the server in relation to the amount of use it is getting.
