I have several NT4 workstations on a Domain of NT4 Servers.
For no apparrent reason PC's just hang for 15-30 secs, then carry on, all at random, no matter which software is running. Everything has been fine for ages. No changes no new software.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thanks
I've seen this from time to time as well. Unfortunately I don't have an answer. I suspect it is network related. How many drive mappings or other persistent connections do you have on your workstations? NT does not multitask network communications very well - there are a lot of hard coded timeouts in the 20 second range. A dropped connection being reestablished could easily freeze a machine. I've always suspected that some of my problems stem from browser elections or refreshes of the browse list. I've been working to remove all workstations from the browse list to shrink it.
If you were to have perfmon running on your server and workstations monitoring the network, and you look at it during a freeze and see no activity, you are definitely looking a t timeout problems. These kinds of activities don't even show as an active process, so they are hard to track. I remember reading something about monitoring threads, but haven't had time to play. Sorry I couldn't help more.
