After fighting this issue for several months and finding nothing on the Dell forums, I finally found the following fixes that solved my very slow file access when the Novell client (4.83 sp2) was installed. Slow Windows and Novell browsing to all servers.Opening files took over 2 minutes.
1.Disable file caching in the Novell client advanced properties.
2. Install the beta patch from Novell. NWFILTER.SYS.
frim Novell web site download area.
3. make sure burst mode and LIP are enabled in the Novell client properties.
4. Disable all un-needed protocols in the advanced settings of Network properties. I only left IPX running for Novell and only NetBeui and TCP\IP for the Windows client and file and print sharing.
This completely stopped my slowdown problem. from 2 minutes to open a file from a server it now takes about 3 seconds to open a 1.5MB excel file.
Hope this helps all of the techs I have read on various foruns that are fighting this same problem.
