Slow main web page/Proxy

We have a problem with our Intranet. The mainweb page load very slowly on some users machine. Since we are not running proxy server on our web server, each time you open Internet Explorer 6.0 it will check by default the proxy settings. The problem does not seem to occur with Internet Explorer version 5.0 and earlier versions.

Is there any way we could bypass the proxy setting check up that is performed each time a browser running IE 6 is invoked?

do you have 'automatic proxy configuration' turned on, and if so, do you use it?

if you don't; turn it off.
