I have a large movie that is heavily flashed. the majority of the viewers will have fast modems. but i want to do something for the few with slow modems.

I tried adding a preloader ...but...the problem is

??on a fast modem, the movie loads right away. when i added the preloader, the "loading..please wait" shows up. if it loaded right away before, why is it taking time to load after i added the preloader?

i intended "loading..please wait" to be for those with slow modems only.

does anyone know how to get around this?
also, does anyone know how to break up a movie into parts and use a preloader also, without having a break between parts?

Can you post your fla or your actionscript so we can have a look?

If I understand your second question correctly, you can use the loadMovie action to load another swf.

my movie can be viewed at
i know about the load movie action script, but the problem is...how do you use the "preloader" when dealing with a series of movies linked together with "load movie" scripts?

Your preloader might not be working properly! Or are you just seeing a flash frame of it?
The thing is, without the preloader, a fast modem could probably stream the movie as soon as enough of it has downloaded to allow it to play without breaks, while still donwloading the rest in the background. A slow connection can't keep up with that!

The other thing is, if you're prelading the whole movie and it's a large one, the fast connection won't play it until it's totally loaded, since that the condition you've imposed on it. As I said above, it use to stream, but now you're in fact telling it not to stream and to play only when fully loaded.

As for preloading several movies in one preloader, that won't give you a significant difference in time than if you were to load the one big movie. LoadMovie actions will only occur when the current movie hits the frame where they're called, and usually the preloader doesn't take frame actions into consideration while preloading!

You can preload several movies in the main preloader (more complicated though!), and then have the next movie play when you reach the end of the first one, but there's then no gain in preloading time!

You only hope is that everybody gets afast connection some day!
