Slow Keyboard Response

Perhaps someone can clarify an issue I have noticed with MetaFrame 1.8. When uses are typing for example in Word via thin client there is occasionally a quite large lag in keyboard response times, the users are accessing over a WAN link, however there is only 10 users over a 250K link, this should be plenty of bandwidth. I have also noticed this in the past over a LAN with lots of bandwidth available, the uses in question accessing a Windows 2000 Server, however I have noticed this with NT4.0 also. Is there a configuration change I can make to alleviate this problem, (keyboardtimer=0) has already been implemented. Is this just an anomaly that there is no real answer to, I find zero help on Citrix or Microsoft sites as through they do not recognise this as a issue.

Depending on which MetaFrame Service pack and clients you are running, you can use the ZL (Zero Latency) features to assist in this. For example, you could use the SpeedScreen Latency Reduction manager to speed up specific applications (such as Word).

250k should be OK for 10 users provided you've switched off audio and got rid of as much animated stuff as possible (like the Office Assistant, menu effects, blinking cursors, etc).

I hope this helps

Clients are using ICA version below 6.0 and they are also using Word 97 which is not supported by ScreenScreen

How does one trun of blinking cursors?

mrpeashop; I'd recommend you update the clients ASAP.

Try also modifying the following registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 10

If the value does not exist, highlight PARAMETERS, go to Edit and select add value. Choose REG_ DWORD format.

Check out Technet articles Q120642, Q170359, and Q158474.

I wasn't aware that Word 97 doesn't work with SpeedScreen 2 - I'm sure I've got it working at a couple of sites (it's been a while!).

Also try reducing the resolutions that the clients use to 256 colours, and increasing the cache size.

chifu;

HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop
"CursorBlinkRate" - set it to -1

Other useful keys to adjust for better WAN performance include
AutoEndTasks=1
WaitToKillAppTimeout=20000
MenuShowDelay=10
SmoothScroll=dword:00000000
DragFullWindows=0

and under \WindowMetrics,

MinAnimate=1

These settings, taken from the Tuning Tips guide on Citrix's site, are best applied to the default user, since it's a bit of a pain to go around updating everyone individually. Of course, the changes won't be propagated unless you update existing user profiles, however :)
