I just did a fresh install of xp and have installed updates and not much else. My problem is my browser and p2p apps are painfully slow, almost like I have dial-up. I have high speed and when downloadinf from Microsoft or other sites I get speeds like 700k\sec and speed tests show I have good bandwidth. I have tried updating to IE7 and using FireFoz and still have the same problem. My p2p is only 2-5 k/sec. I have a rule in Windows firewall for the p2p and have disabled my Windows firewall and antivirus and they are not the problem. I have no software firewall besides Windows and I have no hardware router. I don't know what else to do to troubleshoot this, it takes about 30 sec to load a web page so it's tough looking on the net for tips. Any ideas what it could be?

Running attached to the internet without a firewall and without an Antivirus program can lead to only one thing: a computer infected with malware.

Likely by this time your computer is so infected that only a clean reformat and install will be able to sort things.

I only turned off the firewall and antivirus to troubleshoot the problem so I don't think I caused it. This problem just started happening after a fresh install. I was disconnected from the net during the windows install so I don't think it got infected before I got av software on it.

Do a Panda ActiveScan, and post the log back to the Forum.

Download, install, update and scan/fix using Ewido/AVG Antipsyware: This too can produce a log. Please post it back to the Forum.

Go here:

Choose: SG TCP/IP Analyzer

and then DL: SG TCP Optimizer and run...

and adjust as necessary and reboot...

another note: Windows XP SP2 (and later Patches) limit the internet connections to 10, basically crippling P2P applications...
Take a look into your EventViewer to look for errors relating to this (Something like TOO MANY OPEN CONNECTIONS or such)...

The following file, will repatch the TCPIP.SYS file for this purpose only... DO NOT set the limit TOO HIGH!

As you have just installed XP and therefore don't have too much to lose apart from time, it might pay you to start again from scratch. You could then check you connectivity on completion, and again after every install of a program or an update, until you find the problem.

Alternatively a look at the Event Viewer is a good place to gather clues. As is trying your luck while booting via Safe Mode with Networking. You could also create another user in Normal Mode and try that.

Also look at defrag, clean up installation files and reg clean.

Never give up never give in.

There are no short cuts to anything worth doing :)

I have done everything recommended in this thread and it is still painfully slow. The Panda scan shows the TCP patch mentioned here that I downloaded as a hacker tool. I scanned and cleaned with AVG, ran the TCP Optimiser and the analyzer shows I have good speed. I don't know what else to try, this is my second rebuild in as many days and I still have the problem. Any other suggestions?

Do you think my suggestion, "As you have just installed XP and therefore don't have too much to lose apart from time, it might pay you to start again from scratch. You could then check you connectivity on completion, and again after every install of a program or an update, until you find the problem." is worth a try, or are you saying that as soon as XP is installed you see this problem?

Tells you that it does something to a SYSTEM FILE, which I described. It is by no means MALICIOUS, and I have been using it for years without any problems, and I would not have suggested it if it wasn't safe...

if the TCP ANALYZER and OPTIMIZER have not brought any improvement with the browsing, then I would check the DMA status of the Drives, and turn off Prefetching and Indexing, aswell as WINSOCK settings. In the RUN BOX (or CMD Window) type netsh winsock reset catalog (works starting with SP2 and later) to reset the WINSOCKS and reboot...

Another Note: P2P progs do not always DL at FULLSPEED, they DL at what speed they are being served at. Meaning that the problem may lie at the other end...

if all else fails, do as Linney suggested, and rebuild from scratch, as there may be more problems then you or we may think...

I have no connections in my Network places. This is a new rebuild with the only thing insalled is Azureus, office 2003 and the latest windows installer patch. The build I have is xp with sp2 streamlined and that is all I have installed. How do I rebuild and install 1 thing at a time and still be protected? Should I just install xp and azureus with no av or spyware software and see if the speed improves?

It wont be too risky to do a quick test of your download speed on a completely clean machine, all you have to do is check your speed connecting to this site or Google and then you can disconnect from the Internet.

You can try Safe Mode with Networking as a possible alternative to the clean install method to check your speed.

Should I just install xp and azureus with no av or spyware software and see if the speed improves?

No.

Not only is it unlikely they have anything to do with your issue, you cannot even contemplate using the internet without both installed and running.

I second what BCastner said, you should not connect to the internet without an AV at least!

also what both Linney and I mentioned, about REBUILDING, was meant that it may be prudent to just start all over from the BEGINNING... ie. reformat and reinstall XP...

Then install an AV and Software FireWall... then install Azureus, run TCP Optimizer according to your internet connection... etc...

Internet Speed Checks:

Note: they will not all be the same, this is due to location of the Servers, the hops the data takes, etc... but should give you a good indication if the speed is slow or not...

Fresh install and web pages still take forever to load as well as azureus downloads are slowere thatn they should be. My dl speed tests are around 3800 kbit/sec. Alll I have installed is windows with sp2, azureus, avg, java and avast. I have been at this page for about 5 minutes now and it still says 10 items remaining to download. Any other ideas?

I See AVG and Avast you not trying to install two AV's are you, Bad idea if you are. So AV's will play together, most won't! I am useing a PC that was give to me as bad, thay had goten a new one said old one bad. PC was so slow could not use the only problem was thay had 3 differt vertions of Norton loaded.

The AVG is anti-spyware and the avast is anti-virus so I don't think that's a problem.

How is this machine running otherwise? Have you looked in the Task Manager to see if anything is using all of the CPU while pages are downloading? Have you checked with your ISP's support?

WinXP Connectivity Issues

This thread will lead you into the MTU settings side of things, it is only a suggestion for something else you can consider and check.

Tell us about your hardware setup, have you multiple Network Adapters? Are there any driver updates, did you install the correct drivers after your XP installs?

Has this machine ever been connected correctly to the Internet, or is it a new machine. If it is not new, why was it necessary to fresh install XP in the first place?

I have had this system for 3 years and haven't had this problem before. There are 2 onboard adapters and I have installed the drivers from the motherboard cd that I have used for the past years. The reason for the rebuild I was getting some random reboots. I did some memory testing, all passed but when I removed a stick of 512 and left in a 1gb stick the reboots stopped. I had a bunch of kids games on there that weren't used anymore so I just decided to do a rebuild. Could memory be the problem? I know it causes lots of issues. I will put in a nre stick of 512 by itself today and see if it makes a difference.
