Slow IE Pages, Slow Programs and erratic Mouse 2

I am experiencing a range of problems that may or may not be connected except they all started at the same time.

I find that pages in IE7 are slow to load or wont load and refresh has to be used (clicking on a link here at Tek Tips takes about 30 seconds to load) Interactive sites do not always work (zooming on routemaps often does not work at all)games from MSN often wont load or need repeated attempts to load (when they do load they use about 80% CPU)

other programs take a long time to start up or open files.

I have a Bluetooth Intellimouse that has mad erratic spells.

I have just rebuilt my pc using Xp Pro SP2. I have Windows on its own 40Gb partition. I have 1gb ram. I have Norton Internet Security 2007 (problems persist when turned off) Indexing is turned off. System Restore is Off. Page file is set to 2048 and is on a separate partition to Windows (this partition/drive is 175Gb. I do not have any logitech programs/hardware installed. Everything is uptodate including drivers. Adaware and Spybot show no problems.

So does anyone out there have any ideas?

Thanks

Ray

Updated ChipSet Drivers? Updated GFX Drivers?

any driver conflicts?

what is running in the background? are you running more than 1 AV software program?

i would look at currently running and startup programs to see if you can identify a possible culprit.

Do you see the same problems in "Safe Mode with Networking", or in Normal Mode but with a different User?

Are there any clues in the Event Viewer?

Have you tried running IE7 without Add-ons?

You could try resetting Internet Explorer settings. (Help and Support article)

"If disabling add-ons doesn't solve the problem, try resetting Internet Explorer back to its default settings. This removes all changes that have been made to Internet Explorer since it was installed, but it does not delete your favorites or feeds.

Close all Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer windows.
Click to open Internet Explorer.
Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.

When you are done, click Close, and then click OK.
Close Internet Explorer and reopen it for the changes to take effect."

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

Can you try a basic Mouse instead of your current one?

linney,

Thanks for that.

I had to reset IE7 to get it working properly but my mouse is still wierd. Using a PS2 mouse seems to have no problems.

The mouse seems worse when IE7 is running.

Thanks again.

Ray

Can you check the Mouse out on another machine? You did say you had the latest drivers but have you got an earlier one you can Rollback to in case it is only a driver problem?

Sorry but I dont have another machine to use this on. I have tried both old and latest drivers but still get the same. However I have run task manager while using IE7 and it is worse when I have a msn game running when CPU usage goes up to 99% or I have two browsers (not tabs) open at the same time.

Thanks for your ideas,

Ray

Removing adware & spyware
faq608-4650

Try the free version of "Ewido" now called "AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5"

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

My own personal view of Norton, is that I would never use it. Many people find it a resource hog. Even if it is disabled, settings in the Registry (from Norton) may still effect how the system runs.

Thanks again for your ideas.

I have now done all of them but the problem remains.

The problem only now appears when I have IE7 pages open and when the mouse is over the page.

Moving it back to the desktop or onto another program window and it behaves normally again.

Did you ever reproduce this problem in Safe Mode, or in Normal Mode but with a different user?

Same fault with different user

Cant replicate in safe mode as I have to use different keyboard and mouse (PS2)

Running from clean boot still has the problem

I have run SFC and Chkdsk

This is just wierd.

Try this:
After you've done checking for virus/spyware/etc, download,install/run ccleaner ( This will clean junk files and clean the system registry. Make sure to back up important data first, just in case something may go wrong (a standard warning).

WARNING: I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ABOVE ACTION. RUN CCCLEANER AT YOUR OWN RISK.

After ccleaner has finished, and it may take a while, depending on various factors. Next defrag your harddrive. I would then open a command prompt (Start->run->type: cmd and press enter)

From the comamnd window I would then type: chkdsk c: /R You will then be asked if you want CHKDSK to run at the next boot up. Press Y. Close the command window and reboot. WARNING: CHKDSK may take a long time to run (20minutes to 1 hour or more). it will check for disk problems and attempt to fix them. It will also attempt to reclaim blank space on your drive. This SHOULD help with your performance problems and mouse problems.

I found AusLogics Disk Defrag works better than the Windows version. You can download it free at:

Another free utility is 10bit SmartDefrag available at:

Beware though, it's still in Beta stage. I'm currently testing on my wife's PC (unbeknown to her).

As linney mentioned, run AV & AS apps. Grisoft, once known as Ewido, has excellent AV, AS and an Anti-Rootkit. After installing these apps, check for updates before running. Do an in depth search on all & follow their recommended actions for anything they find. If threats, viruses etc. are found, you should Disable System Restore. This will clear out all previous restore points. Then re-enable System Restore & set a new restore point. You can call it post virus removal or whatever. The date will be automatically appended to the file name. This will eliminate the chance of reintroducing any viruses using Sytem Restore.

If problem persists, run Device Manager & see if there are any conflicts showing, especially under Mice. If no help there, you might want to try running HikackThis.

Be aware that this is a Beta version. If you're leery about running a Beta app, you can download the last released version at:

Download it to its own folder. Do a system scan & save log then post the log to this thread.

Hope this helps!

Ya, I forgot about AusLogic's Disk Defrag and I use it! I also like their registry defrag, other than it requires a reboot when the scan is done, which is a pain in the butt.

I would also recommend a page file defragger, just to be complete. Sysinternal's PageDefrag works well, and works at bootup.

"Using a PS2 mouse seems to have no problems"

Have you tried setting the Bios to any Safe Default settings, or maybe there is a later Bios update available?

Maybe the Mouse is just faulty, or is not fully compatible with your setup?

Hi!

Ive done all this but as I do not have a full version of ccleaner it was only able to remove 50 of 175 faults (none of these show on Norton Win Doctor

After a quick scan of your HJT log, the only item I see that you can fix is:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Have you tried going into Device Manager & uninstalling the mouse, shut down & restart your PC? Let Windows find your 'new' device & install needed drivers. Also, have you tried connecting your mouse to another PC running the same OS & browser?

Hi!

Sorry to be so long in replying but I could not log in on my previous ID and Emails to Tek Tips were not answered so I have had to register a new ID.

I have tried all the ideas. Un-installing does solve the problem initially but it comes back in 24 hours or less.

What i did notice was that when the Intellimouse software was removed the PS2 mouse works fine

I have decided to give up.

I have removed the mouse software and am using the PS2 mouse until I can buy a different mouse.

Thank you for all your help

Ray
