slow graphics after watching videos

doing graphical activities like watching movies makes my computer slow. scrolling and dragging windows around lag severely. the only solution to this is reducing hardware acceleration by a notch, but my computer is slower as a result. is this a problem with the video card? it's persisted despite several reformats.

an interesting note: leaving hardware acceleration on full, after experiencing the slowdown, i can make it relatively fast again by playing with the display settings, like toggling the resolution.

i do not have any other pci devices, so my card is not conflicting with anything. all drivers except the graphics one are the latest (i have better performance with 45.23 than with 53.03. in any case, i've had the problem with different drivers, so it's not driver-related).

i checked the device manager and there are no irq conflicts, but i see that my graphics card is sharing irq 12 with the nvidia nforce pci system management.

specs:
amd athlon xp 2000+
abit nf7-s v2.0
wd se 80gb 7200 rpm 8mb cache
maxtor 40gb
micron 512mb pc2100 ddr ram
geforce4 ti4200 64mb ram
antec 350w psu
win xp pro sp1

i'm using dets. 45.23, reverting from 53.03.

thanks.

edit: i did an online benchmark at pcworld/pcpitstop:
the graphics performance is ~30 mp/s, the number of megapixels displayed per second--the higher, the better. when i can set the hardware acceleration on full, i get ~90 mp/s. i even tested my friend's computer, an old 1ghz pentium machine with 810e integrated graphics, and the performance was higher, around ~40 mp/s. why does my ti4200 fail in comparison to integrated graphics?

nevermind, i fixed it. alpha transparencies were causing problems.
