Slow file I/O through Cisco routers

I have a 16-bit COBOL app that uses a lot of File I/O tranfers between Server to Workstation, however, we just went to two subnets but on the same hop and the file transfer is like 10 times slower. We run a pure IP environment with Netware 5.1.

Is this a Novell or a Cico issue? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks you.

Do ping tests from the server (using PING.NLM) to workstations on each subnet, do pings to each subnet give a similar response time? Also, do the results of a TRACERT on a workstation indicate a "flat LAN"?

It was about a 3sec delay between subnets. The tracert was about the same.

Thanks

Do you definately mean 3 seconds or 3 milliseconds? If it is 3 seconds then I suggest you definately have a LAN routing issue.

Sorry!! 3 msec. 3 seconds would be bad for sure. I have tried to use a sniffer but nothing really jumped out at me. The APP that is being used operates with COBOL master files ans when we run a process it is not unheard of to have approx. 300 files open at any given time. A lot of the processing is being done by the Workstation as well but there is definately a lot of file transefer to and from. Still no ideas.

I'll assume that you're using at least ethernet on the switches & NICs.

Are the interfaces on the router fast ethernet also, or are they 10BaseT?

If they're only 10 megabit, that would explain your tenfold reduction in speed

It could be because on one of the routers in question it is a 10BaseT interface. I am pretty sure that everything else is 100 though. I will have to check because it is happening at another site as well and as far as I know they are 100 across the board.

We will see.
