We recently added new servers to our Exchange 2007 environment at a new datacenter that is connected to our current datacenter via an OC-3 line. We have moved the mailboxes of a number of pilot users to the new MB servers, and some of them are experiencing a peculiar issue with search. When they have done no searches for a while (exactly how long is unknown at this time) the initial search can take as long as 30 - 40 seconds while subsequent searches return results nearly instantly. This will repeat throughout the day. It is not limited to any specific server. Does anyone know what would cause this? It's almost as though the server is reindexing mailboxes periodically.

When all else fails, read the book!

Are your users running in Cached Mode? This would help in their search functions. If they are, then the search in mail is local to their machines. If they are running Windows 7, I have seen the search function cause slowness issues and sometimes forcing a re-indexing on the local machine clears things up.

In the search box on Win7, type in indexing to locate the Indexing Options.
