We are using NBU 3.4.1GA with LTO drives when we use 1 drive we get 23mbps throughput but if we span 4 drives each drive slows down to 8mbps. Veritas are not being very helpfull they have said that it must be the network but I can't really see that at all it's all on gigabit backbone.

Maybe a bottle neck on the HBA (Host bus adapter) - would not really recommend more than 1 or 2 drives per HBA do you have 4 drives on one HBA?

Are the stats better for spanning 2 drives that just one drive - then 3 drives....?
Does the issue get worse after 2 drives? or after 3 drives or after 4 drives?

How are the drives connected? SAN? Local?

You mention Gigabit - there are some issues on certain vendors cards due to driver issues - Compaq cards you really need the latest drives. The compaq cards are OEM from Intel - try there driver or the latest Compaq driver, that it if you have a compaq Gigabit card.

In our environment - I never, ever connect more than two LTO drives to a server - The performance hit is just too much. In one unit, a Dell PV136T, we have 6 x LTO drives and 3 media servers - 2 drives per media server.
