I have recently rebuild a windows 2000 server from scratch. Originally it had two mirrored drives and we needed to upgrade to RAID5. Having upgraded the hardware I couldn't restore the backup completely because the hardware was so different. So, I recreated the AD by entering all of the user names again and then restored the data from tape. However, before the rebuild I noticed the server had two problems
1. Whenever you opened a DOS prompt and typed a command (e.g. ping) you never saw what you had typed until you pressed enter - then it would display it and perform the command.
2. After the server had been running for a while - if you brought up the "active directory users and computers" MMC snap in and double clicked a uses account, no property page would be displayed, but when you came to close the snap in it would say "close all property pages before exiting". After a while the machine just grinds to a halt and fails to perform logon etc. After a reboot it's ok for a while but then goes back to the problem.
I expected both of these problems to have been resolved following a complete rebuild. However, they are both back again. I've run the stinger from Macafee but it detects nothing.
Any other suggestions - has anyone seen this before.
