slow DLT tape drive

Hi,

It took me 6 1/2 hours to extract using tar a 2.5 GB file from a 40GB DLT tape? It's doing like 200-300kb/s download. Can anyone recommend a solution or perhaps a better brand of tape drive? I use IBM Netfinity hardware.
Although, the machine itself is a credit card authorization system and is quite busy.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
