I seem to have a problem with Word 2000 and large directories when using the "open" dialog box. After opening and closing many files the directory listing gets slower and slower . The behaviour stops when Word is restarted , but then returns after enough documents are worked with . I've noticed it on more than one PC . I've tried increasing the Word file cache per MS's optimization tips , and it seems to be a little better , but not much. The machine is 500mhz with 128 mb RAM. Of course it doesn't help the directories are HUGE ( several thousand docs), but Explorer
seems to have no trouble giving a rapid listing.

I also need to point out that file saving slows down also. The machine's OS is Windows 98

If you hve thousands of files it is going to be slow anyway.

Under Tools, Options, File Locations, check to see if it's try access a network resource. That may slow thing down just a touch.

Since it's OS98, I would suggest that if Find Fast is installed, turn it off. (Win2k automatically disables it)

Lastly, the biggest culprit is Jurnalling in Outlook. Make sure Journalling is off.

Hope that helps.
