slow CD / DVD drive access

I have a machine running XP pro, whenever i try to access the CD / DVD drives it takes forever. The whole machine slows until the disc is read. sometime si cannot eject the drives.

I have tries changing the IDE cable and unplugging each of the drives but the problem remains.

The system event lkog is full of warnings about the CD and ATAPI.

Is this a dodgey motherboard or could it be the drives.

The system is totally up to date with service packs etc.

MAybe the drive is only running at Pio Mode instead of DMA -Mode ?
