Slow Backups with Windows 2000

I'm currently running Legato 5.5.1 server on a Unix box with a dlt hooked to it. Our Unix backups seem to run just fine with normal backup speeds, but a Windows 2000 server is backing up at ~200 KB/s, which is extremely slow when we have to backup about 75 GB of data on it. All nic's on both machines are running at 100MB/s full duplex, with no errors reported on either one.
Any hints?

Several points, firstly, you should be using version 6 as version 5 ceases support this month and 5.5.1 is old anyway.
Secondly, have you tried doing a dd/cpio to the tape device.
If, for instance, you are backing up All in savesets, then
take the / directory and do
find / -mount -print | cpio -ocv>tapedevice
or dd if=/dev/...... of=/dev/tapedevice bs=65536

(replacing with the relevant names for the device for / and for tapedevice , e.g. /dev/rdsk/c0b0d0s1 or /dev/rmt/ctape1)

What sort of speed do you get then?

Hi,

Have you ever tried to transfer a file from one machine to the other ?? ftp, NFS copy or whatever else ???

If you don't get any decent speed at all, change (force) your adapters to half-duplex on the machines and the switch. Auto-detect provides you the ability to auto-detect the media speed but not necessarily to adjust the speed to the one detected. Sometimes your 100Mbps networks seems to be a 1Mbps because of this fact. Half-Duplex very often solve this problem.

By the way, 100 FD is not 200Mbps typically.... It's 100Mbps in and 100Mbps out. Your backup stream is unidirectionnal so FD doesn't really matter.
