Software compression will NOT speed up the backup, you will only gain on disk space if you backup to disk.
My advise: whether you run a backup to disk and a copy to tape (disk staging) of a backup directly to tape don't use software compression, stick to the hardware compression.
Enabling software compression requires some CPU time on the machine sending/compressing the data, whereas with hardware compression it is all done by the tape drive with no overhead.
What is your reason for wanting to use software compression over hardware compression?
