Slow backup - no error messages

ArcServe 6.5 build 620 on an NT SBS server with a HP T20 tape drive (no client backups just the server). Starting on the evening of 6/19/02, 6G backup time went from 2 hr to 44 hr! No error messages are produced in any log that I can find. A Restore operation from a backup tape seemed to occur normally. During backup the tape drive now runs for a 15-30 seconds, then stops for 5-10 minutes, then repeats. Before 6/19/02 the tape drive ran almost continuously during a backup.

The only unusual activity on the day of 6/19 was a bad automatic update of CAI InoculateIT that caused the virus software to be disabled. A manual download of il0084i.exe from the CAI FTP site was executed to restore the virus software operation.

Try disabling the antivirus during the backup and see if that makes a difference. If it does then you have pinpointed your problem and can resolve it.

Problem was caused by InoculateIT virus checking software. When the InoculateIT option "Allow Fast Backups" was enabled, the tape backup response returned to normal. I guess the virus update on Wed 6/21 disabled that option (even though many previous updates both automatic and manual have kept all options and settings the same).

We use a script to shutdown our AV software for the duration of the backup, preventing any problems with speed etc.

You can run these scripts using the pre and post options in the backup job.

It's a good idea to stop other non-critical services in this way to speed it up more.
