Slow backup between servers

I have two IBM Netfinity 5000 servers, one with an internal DLT. When I back up this server ( using Arcerve 2000 ) I get a rate of approx. 148 Mb / Min. If I try to back up another server I get a rate of about 24 Mb / Min. Both servers have 100Mbps cards and can copy files between each other in no time at all. Does anyone know where or what is causing the bottleneck ? If I can't resolve this I'll have to sell me other kidney for another DLT !!!

haven't you realized yet why is it so? 'hope so.

if not, it's because when you backup your server1(with arcserve), it doesn't use the nic. the throughput (148 Mb/Min is quite slow) limitation would be the server1's hardware (cpu, mem, dlt) itself.

server2's (remote) throughput limitation would be all of the above plus the server2' hardware (cpu, mem, nic).

Even backing up a remote server should give you at least 80Mb/min especially if both servers are on a 100Mb connection.

You have to delve deep here I am afraid. This could be related to the configuration of your network, even if copying between servers is ok. I have seen this happen when one server is half-duplex and another is full-duplex. I have also seen this when both servers ports on their respective switch/hub is configured to auto-sense the connection speed. What I had to do was to force both my network connections to 100Mb/Full Duplex for the backup speed to increase.

Kewl is correct though, 148Mb/min is not quick backing up a server internally. I would expect at least 220Mb/min? -----------------------------------------------------

Speed is also dependent on the type of DLT being used (quantum 4000, 7000, or 8000) and the compression of the files. Anything that is graphic or database will be significantly slower than text as the file is already fully compressed. Quantum 4000 max speed is 120 mb per min, 8000 max is 240 mb per min while backing up fully compressed file types
