Hello,
i view apache files on my local hard disk, 127.0.0.1, and DO NOT have any networking, When I view my avi links the download at a verry slow rate, like 35 kilobits, even though when I view them directley off my hard disk(not thru apache), the dowload time is so fast, Real Player opens up and plays straight away as I expect apache to do, Can anyone offew me any help on this???

thanx! skottieb:)

Hi mate,

As I mentioned previously, this is because when you view the files through Apache, the browser downloads the files.

When you open directly from the hard drive, the files ARE NOT downloaded. They play from the hard drive and not from the internet.

The files are on your machine but when you connect through the internet the browser has no idea that the files are local and therefor must download them.

Hope this helps Wullie

Thanx,
But how can i tell apache to downlaod at a higher speed??

It's not apache's fault. If you have a collision lite, you will see that data is smashing into itself quite a bit. Even though the data is on the same machine, if you did a trace route you will see that the data bounces all over the creation. Mind you, your modem and internet connection are trying to pass data in both directions at once. You can also receive data faster than you can send if you are using dsl or cable. Remember your hard drive is banging away reading and writing at the same time. My guess is that if you had a friend access the files from another location, it will be much faster.

i cant have a friend access it from another location as i dont have static IP. What do you mean by collision lite?? when i did a traceroute it traced ip 127.0.0.1 in under 10 miliseconds, ping was just as fast, if ping and traceroute report these times why cant apache send data as if i was asking for it directly from the hard drive??? skottieb:)

Is the possible reason that it is running slow because I only have a modem installed on my system?? If I install a 10/100 network interface would it speed up?? skottieb:)

Some success, when I view the webpage using the hostname instead of the ip address it downlaods much faster!!! Not as fast as off the hard disk but fast enough, Does anyone know why this is??? I am on a Win2000 box!

Just another note, when I click on the link for the avi, the Status bar ((in Opera) only opera can view the hostmane 127.0.0.1) starts goin wild, Speeds fluctuating, and the bytes downloaded just goes thru the roof, this does not happen when I view the site using the ip address!! It can cause Opera to hang for a while. Does anyone have an idea why this is?? skottieb:)
