We are running the following setup.

SBS 2003 Server.
6 Win XP Clients
1 Linksys 8 Port Hub
1 Netgear ADSL Router/Hub

We have recently installed a new accounts package on the server, Sage Line50 Ver 12. Access to the program is VERY SLOW on all clients, we have talked to Sage about the problem who have said we should check antivirus/firewalls etc. We have disabled antivirus and firewalls but the problem still exists. Sage are now blaming our network! any suggestions to test or speed up our network appreciated.

There are few things to look at;
1. If you are going to run a networked application, do not use a hub, upgrade to a switch. With 6 users on an 8 port hub you are essentially sharing bandwidth, no control from collisions since all machines are "competing" for resources
2. What kind of network cards are you using? Make sure they are using the latest driver versions.
3. Make sure you are only running TCP/IP as your protocol.
4. Since you are a small network, you probably do not use any sort of name resolution to connect to the server. A lot of applications can respond slowly because of this. Try adding the server name to your client's HOSTS file.

Are you running AV on your server / PC's? Sage have a list of file extensions that need to be excluded from your realtime protection. If they are not excluded than you will find Line 50 runs like a dog :). If Sage cannot tell you the list of exclusions then I should be able to get it for you.

You will need to exclude these extns on both the server and workstations.

How do your workstations connect to the Sage data? Mapped drive or UNC path?
