Just a quick question. I know the earlier AMD chips were intel compatible. Are the slot A athlons compatible with slot 1?

Also, NO. Slot 1/Slot 2 were Intel Pentium II/Celeron processors and Slot A was an AMD Athlon CPU. They didn't interchange. I have one of each, a Pentium II/266MHz and an AMD Athlon 700MHz.

The original Pentiums and Amd K6's and K6-2's all used socket 5/7 way back if i remember correctly

bigtedeuk is correct, the first pc I built myself was an AMD k-6, geez, I think I still have the guts of it lying around in my basement.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

bigtedeuk is correct, the second version of the Pentiums and the AMD K6/K6-2/K6-3 all used the Socket 7 boards. The first Pentiums were the 60MHz and 66MHz versions and used in a Socket 4 motherboard. Next came the Socket 5 and speeds of 75-133MHz.

But here is a chart of the various sockets and CPUs for them:
