I have a notebook HD I would like to use with my desktop. I have the adapter needed. When I plug the notebook HD into the ribbon I can't see either. One at a time it works fine. There is a master/slave jumper diagram on the notebook HD, so I popped open the case. I don't see any jumpers at all. The notebook HD is a tp-390 6.0 (IBM thinkpad).
Any help would be appreciated.

What sort of adapter have you got? The one I have only allows the laptop hard drive to connect (ie, it takes up whole of the IDE connection). Also, the drive would only work if not jumpered (jumpering it as master - nothing).

So can only suggest having it alone on IDE connector with no jumpers, other hard drive? on the other IDE connector.

The 2.5 to 3.5 drive adapter does not include a jumper with the data cable/power adapter. IBM and Toshiba do include pins to put a jumper on to make them Master with Slave present or Slave. Look at IBM's site to get the proper setting. It is part of the 4 pins separate from the rest.

[Ignore the missing pin in the middle of the 44, I couldn't get an image in here, the pin is actually in the upper row with the missing pin in the bottom row.]

The TP-390 appears to be the notebook so a number from the drive itself would be helpful. You might look here for a sample picture, it's for a 20GB IBM drive I have:
