We are using V9.0 and have some files that are being skipped during backup. Can you look and see if it's ok if they are skipped. If not I'll call support.

File is in use:
\\EXCHANGE SERVER \C:\exchsrvr\imcdata\queue.dat
File is in use:
\\EXCHANGE SERVER\C:\WINNT\system32\dhcp\dhcp.mdb
File is in use:
\\EXCHANGE SERVER\C:\WINNT\system32\dhcp\j50.log
File is in use:
\\EXCHANGE SERVER\C:\WINNT\system32\dhcp\tmp.edb
File is in use:
\\EXCHANGE SERVER\C:\WINNT\system32\wins\j50.log
File is in use:
\\EXCHANGE SERVER\C:\WINNT\system32\wins\wins.mdb
File is in use:
\\EXCHANGE SERVER\C:\WINNT\system32\wins\winstmp.mdb

Thanks for your help

They are all OK - none are needed to do a restore, except possibly dhcp.mdb if you have alot of dhcp subnets setup.

To get around this, you need the Open File Option.

Thanks Justin2000. We didn't buy OFO because it was causing us problems in our older version. 7.3

I’ve been reading that I should shut off circular logging to be able to restore properly. Is that true?

rockchalk, u mean circular logging for exchange? if you have the disk space turn it off as you will be able to restore the exchange databases to a point in time(depending on the reason for restore of course), not just to the time of last backup(as with circular logging turned on).

Sorry Justin2000, I should have explain better. Yes circular logging for exchange is what I was talking about.
I should have plenty of space. I don't understand what circular logging does but it sounds like I should turn it off ASAP.
So what you are saying is that with circular logging off, I can restore from any backup. With circular logging on, I have to backup from the last backup tape.
True?

Rockchalk, not quite..

With circular logging on - you can restore any full backup of exchange - but when the stores startup it will only be to the point of last backup.

With circualr logging off - just say for some reason, at 4pm today, you IS shuts down and you find that it is corrupt, and the only way back is to restore it. What you can do is restore the full backup made last night(what you do is called a No Loss Restore in backup Exec) - when the IS starts up, it will start replaying the logs made after the full backup - so you don't actually lose any email since the last full backup was made.

A couple of caveats on this - just say in the above scenario, the tape for some reason doesn't want to restore, so you need to go back a day further - for this restore you HAVE to do a Loss Restore - because the log files will be out of sequence.

Another bad thing I think about circular logging, is that if you, say, you get a message that corrupts your IS, and you know it's this, if you do a restore of the IS, then the logs will replay again, and quite possibly corrupt the database again. The only way around this is to do a hard recovery, which in itself is dodgy and wouldn't recommend anyone doing it, unless it was instructed to by MS, and it is a total last resort.
