Sizing web servers

Are there any rules of thumb when it comes to determining how many web servers are required to service a particular number of concurrent connections
 
nope, because it depends what each of those connections is doing..
if each connection simply reads a static file, its going to be network throughput that runs out first

if each connection reads a dynamic page which pulls data out of a database and performs some sort of action, then displays, yoiure obviously going to get a lot less simultaneous connections on that machine!
