Sizing text input with css not size="x"

Does anyone know how to do this or if it is even possible?

I want the text box to fill 100% of the cell width, preferably I would want width:100%; but defining the width in pixels would be accpetable.

I havent managed to get this to work so any help would be appreciated

This should work:

<input type="text" style="width:100%;" ... />
