Size Header Row on Matrix

as per subject, I am trying to resize the HEader row on a matrix control. There are about 9 data columns and 3 groups and there are 4 matrix controls stacked vertically. Only the top matrix control needs headers but I cannot seem to reduce the row height of the header. Whatever I set it at, it seems to want to be about 1.2 cm high.......

anyone seen this before / know of a remedy ??
