Hello just wondering how I can add a server from a different site to replicate. I have attempted to right click on NTDS settings in sites and services and selected to active directory connection and selected a domain controller on another site. when complete the name of the connections was the server name. All other connections have <automatically generated> in the name setting. Should I be worried about this?

The knowledge consistency checker will have automatically created the connection objects for you unless it has been specifically disabled. What actual problems are you experiencing?? Do you have replication problems??

One of my DC's in the remote site has crashed and it was the one that had the NTDS replication to our datacenter. The second DC in the remote site does not have a connection to the datacenter...so I added it manually.

Sounds like the crashed server was acting as a bridgehead server for replication, if it was then you would have replication problems to/from DCs in that site. You can check if the remaining DC is a bridghead, and make it one if required;
Under the site in question expand servers, right click the DC - Properties and then select Context and then there are options to add the server as a bridgehead if I remember correctly.

What's happening/happened with the crashed DC??

Looks like I will have to reinsatll the OS on the crashed DC. Can I name it with the same name?

I am getting

STOP: C000218 (Registry File Failure)
The Registry Cannot Load the HIVE File
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE\
or its log alternate. It is corrupt, absent or not writable.

Do you have a system state backup of the dead DC?? If so you can re-install and then use the system state backup to put the DC back in the domain as it was, if you don't have a backup things get a little trickier.

See this for info on a corrupt registry;

Have you tried last known good from the boot menu?

If you have no backup and can't get the server working and have to rebuild you will need to clean up active directory of any references to the dead dc;
