Ermm... A stack of money-related categories downloaded (I guess) from DMOZ, but presented in a duller, less searchable form. Sorry, but what is the point of this site? Why would anybody choose to use it?

You need to add some value - better organisation/better presentation/better information/better something - to attract people to your site instead of Google, DMoz or other established directories. Without that unique selling point you're wasting your time.

FWIW, a practical observation: The headings down the LHS are hard to read in black-against-blue, try a more contrasty colour combination.

PS. There are some spelling mistakes in your dictionary - check out the words supposedly beginning Ft... and Gt...

The point of the site is to have one central, easy to access/use directory of links for anything cash/financial related.

Dmoz and Google weren't as convenient as I would have liked, so I, um, "borrowed" ( ;-) ) some info from them and re-arranged it. Like they say--you know there's a need if you're part of it. Google and Dmoz didn't meet my need well enough. I guess what I should have thought of is that although this site makes the info easier (for me) to access it doesn't really do anything else. That probably isn't enough for other people to use my site instead of the more well known directories. I think I'll follow your comment and add a search to the site when I get the chance, but it will probably be a week or two before that happens, since the easiest way I can think of to do that would be to convert this all to a database driven site, which to save time, I didn't do from the beginning like I should have.

But that doesn't address the problem. Sure, I arranged the links in a way that I thought was more convenient, but I don't really have anything unique. I guess I start visiting and writing reviews for each of the sites I link to? That seems like a lot of work, though, to try to stand out. Does anything else come to mind that would be unique to a good directory?

Thanks,

Rick

P.S. Thanks for the note about the mis-spellings...I totally missed those ;-).

hey RISTMO!
I have to tell you that will not get a lot of love on this one....

Code:
can u look at my site:
[URL unfurl="true"]http://google.com[/URL]
let me know what you think.....I "borrowed" some of thier search capabilites...but I altered the logo
what would you tell me? :-D
same thing...people here are not keen on "borrowed" anything....after all the idea of forum is "Dedign"...copy-paste doesn't reqire any skill.
Sorry If I was harsh but I am just posting (honestly) to what you might expect from this thread.....
GOOD Luck!

I 'borrowed' some of their search capabilites...but I altered the logo" -- I'd say it was about time they got a decent logo! :-D j/k

It seems like the main objection is just that this site has nothing unique? That's a fair complaint. As I get more time, I'm going to weed through all the links on the pages, rating the sites and specifying certain ones as the "best". I don't know if I'll delete the ones that don't have anything special or just list them all underneath the good ones. I'll also add a way to email me with site recommendations. But it'll be a while before I get the chance to do that stuff. Once I rate and review the best sites I'm linking to, I'll either add or delete so many links that it'll fairly be my own directory, not a copy of Dmoz's. But until then, I should add that Dmoz link. But I'm going to change the colors on that to fit my site. They shouldn't mind that.

I guess what's going to eventually make my site "unique" is not so much different information but better organization and easier access to it. The main concern I had for now was the actual site, not the content on it (ie. the comment about the black subtitles being hard to read).

"after all the idea of forum is 'Design'..." -- If you have any comments about the design, go ahead and post them! ;-).

Thanks!

Rick

Hey Rick!
I would consider "formating" the link on the left in better manner= different color combination, less space deducated to links more to the content on the right of it, white text is a problem when printing, some CSS decorations perhaps indent the links from 'categories'.....just kinda "readablity" issues....decrease the logo size....
HTH
All the best!
