I have a Sis530 chipset with onboard video. I have a PNY Verto 32MB PCI graphics card I want to install. I have put the card in but it is not detected/ doesn't work. The reason I think is that I need to disable the on board graphic adaptor. However there is no way to do this in Win2000 or in the CMOS. Any ideas?

Have you installed the drivers for this card? You can try removing the Sis driver in Contol Panel, Add/Remove programs and also in Device Manager and shut down, install the card then install the new drivers. You may just have to disable the old Sis driver in Device Manager. There could be a jumper on the mother board to disable onboard video, but if not, just disabling it in Device Manager (shows with a red "X") should work. It will remain in Device Manager, but disabled. That's the way I do it in Win98, don't know about 2000. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

I can't install the drivers as the install CD cant see the card.

I can't disable the onboard video in Control Panel as it is greyed out (the disable option).

I can't change jumpers as there are none for the video on this motherboard (stupid design).

I will try deleting the drivers for the onboard though and see what happens.

Try a different PCI slot, also. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

Changing the PCI slot worked as it saw the card. Then I deleted the drivers for the onboard video and it automatically chose the new card as the default.

The next problem was getting the drivers to load properly as first Win2000 tries to install some and then the CD with the card wants to install some as well. Eventually it worked after numerous reboots and now it is all working as it should.

Thanks for your help

Well I have a Compaq Pressario 5451 with a onboard Sis530... I can't get the stupid onboard card to disable... I am trying to install a GeForce4 MX 420... I meet all the req. for it and everything... I tried all the PCI slots, but it still runs off the onboard card... I saw in another forum to take out the battery (for onboard card) and put it back in... I can get it to work like 3 -outta- 10 times, but once I restart my comp, it will go right back to the onboard card... If anyone can help me at all, plz tell me! I gotta play some Counter-Strike on a good video card!

Boot into safe mode (F8) and remove the SIS drivers. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

I did that and it didn't work... Windows just identified the onboard card again and reinstalled them... I heard I can do something with "jumpers"... How would I do this?

Some mother boards have a jumper (option strap) to disable onboard video. Some, you have to disable it in the bios. Some, you can't do either one, and on those you've got to keep trying until you get the old adapter disabled in device manger with a red "X". Choose properties in device manager for the old display adapter and see if you can disable in all hardware profiles. I assume you have connected the monitor to the "new" video card. I can't get the card to work period... When I plug the monitor into the new GeForce4 I just get a blank screen... And I can't disable it in device manager...

You should at least get the default drivers to work on the new card. You shouldn't have a black screen. I'd say your video card is bad if you've got the new drivers installed. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

The thing is, the card isn't bad (returned it to best buy and got a new one twice)... 2nd thing is when I go to install the drivers, it says I have no nVIDIA chips installed (when infact the card is in)... I have got the card to work twice by removing the battery on the mobo... But it stops working when I restart the comp. and then goes back to the onboard card... I am not the only one to have this problem... My friend has the same exact card, but after 2wks his BIOS finally listened to him and disabled the card... It has been like 2 1/2weeks for me and still nothing... I have someone that will do it for $25, but I will have to give $10 an hr to do it... But he said he could do it in 1st hr... Well I will keep checking this thread for more help...

I've run out of ideas. Since playing with the CMOS battery seems to help, have you searched the bios for a setting to change? I fold. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

Here is my BIOS options right here (ones I know deal with graphics):

Parallel Port Mode: ECP, EPP, SPP, ECP+EPP {it is set on ECP}

Init Display First: PCI or AGP {I have it set to PCI since the card is PCI}

VGA Shared Memory: PCI: 8MB, 4MB, 2MB
~or~
AGP: 8MB or 4MB {this is set to PCI 8MB}

So maybe one of you would know the best settings I can put it on for the GeForce4 to work... I would also like to thank all of you for your help so far...

I found this about your computer:
"These machines use the Gigabyte GA-5SMM motherboard. Use the f3 BIOS from Gigabyte. Unknown whether these processors will work fully without the f3 BIOS."

I tried to find more info on that motherboard--no luck. You might try searching for it yourself. Sometimes old computers will just not work with super video cards. You might need to go back to a TNT2 or Geforce 2. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

With the pci video card out. Attach your monitor to
the on-board video and power up. Go to device manager and change the video driver to standard vga. Shut down and install the pci video card. Don't forget to attach your monitor to the pci card (it is easy to forget this). Power up and install the software for the new pci card. If you keep getting the SiS530 chipset detection at each startup then select cancel for it and go to device manager and disable the SiS530 there. Some mobo's with on-board video you have to set to satndard vga first and then "piggy back"
the new adapter.

Mainegeek the way you are telling me is the 2nd way I tried (probably tried like 10-15 other ways by now)... It doesn't work... Thx again for the help so far ppl... This pay BestBuy $50 to do it is starting to look better...
