Just starting in the SIP world. Having some issues and the carrier has asked for a SIP trace. Can someone point me in the right direction. Is this a simple piece of software or is it proprietary ?
Depends on hardware/software. A trace is a log of the call setup sequence, your application should be able to create such a log, if not then you could use sniffer software like Wireshark to make a network trace and see what happens.
If you let us know how your setup is, we may be able to point you in the right direction.

We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true.
Well done (getting the carrier to admit fault that is!)

I think I would have to take the rest of the week off if I ever got a provider to admit to a mistake. You really should sacrifice a 2500 set to these telco gods you speak of.
All kidding aside, unless you plan to retire in the next few months, you owe it to yourself to check out wireshark. It's free and easy to learn with a little bit of fooling around- without it you are essentially blind to what is or isn't happening with your calls.
