Hello

forgive me if this has been asked before,

when supplying a router for sip, apart from cisco what would be the best one to use?

Every router that suites your needs :)
It all depends on how big your company is and so on and on

the router i want to supply is to be used purely for the voice,
customers will use thier own router for pc's etc,

if you are supplying a router in this way, what would you normaly buy in?

I do not buy them so i can not tell you that to be honest
Over here it is very common that the provider places the router or the ipo connects to the provider directly

We are moving all our clients to Cisco, it is the only thing we find to give us maximum uptime.

Most of the big SIP providers I deal with anymore use Cisco or Adtran. The trend seems to be moving from Cisco to Adtran.

Hey pal... You should consider choosing the right SIP Provider. Most issues occur when the SIP provider doesnt offer you the right technical features (specially DTMF issues). When you are served SIP trunk from one good SIP provider there's no need to worry about Routers. I have one IPO500 running 2 SIP trunks from different SIP providers. We use Draytek 2910 and it works smoothly. One of the SIP trunk providers use ULaw telephony std and the other one uses ALaw with T38 Fax support. As we hadnt been so lucky with the first choice (SIP trunk provider with DTMF issues, no T38 Fax support), we still have that old SIP trunk installed in our IPO, correctly routed to one automated message of the new phone line. And we also use it conect to other offices that use that same SIP provider. The new one, however, is perfect. It supports T38 fax and the DTMF issues were totally solved.
 
@noelohashiman:), dtmf problems are due to provider leaving dtmf to auto or setting it to something other than rfc2833, for both incoming and outgoing calls.t38 support i agree is a sign of a B class provider, again though, i would question your setup firstly, then blame provider. post set up techniques here....

@routers question, i used drayteks for a while the old modles 2600/2900 were useless for multiple voip calls, even when you figure out how to use the qos settings, however, latency solving is a more important factor. no matter how much you control your internet output you can't control the flow of data from your office to your service provider. Unless you pay for a managed connection you are really just hit and miss setup...
 
cisco and watchguard imo

dont inspect the SIP traffic with your firewall, just let it pass through.... you dont want to create any SIP proxies that will mess with your SIP / RTP packets - it just makes you life hard and the customer will hate SIP
