We have a customer that is moving off an open source system. They have 60 or so Polycom 550s and 335s. They want to reuse those phones and want redundancy.

Can 3rd party phones register to a redundant server as a guest endpoint? Or do I need to license both systems for the phones? Would Server Edition make it any easier?

You will not be doing the customer any favours trying to reuse those handsets, on an IP Office they will have virtually no functionality whatsoever, they will not feel they have much of a system for what it's going to cost to do it. And you will need to say "No" a lot when they ask for things :)

SIP phones do not have redundant logon servers on the IPO yet, only H.323 phones can do that
But I am siding with amriddle01 about the functionality of the phones, it is far less on an IPO than it is on an Asterisk server

So what if I connect the SIP phones to a local 500v2 on a server edition?

If the primary server fails the redundant takes over control of the 500.

Would that work?

No. no, no!!!
There is no redundancy at all for SIP phones!
Server edition and IP500 is a 9.1 select feature only for H.323 Avaya phones of the type 96x1 and 16xx phones.
Tell this customer the truth otherwise they will continue where they left and you will get bitten.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

And even if it worked, adding 60x 3rd pty lic and a Server Edition to the mix would be a lot more expensive than 60 New IP9608.
(And if you compare the phones, there shouldn't be much of a resistance [smile]).

Kind regards

Gunnar

Old saying

Buy Cheep, Buy Twice

don't cut corners at the expense of functionality, supply Avaya Handsets it will save you lots in the long run

A Maintenance contract is essential, not a Luxury.
Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear

@tlpeter
Redundancy from expansion to server is even available for non select systems. Other way around (Server to Expansion or Expansion to Expansion) requires Select. It is even possible to use Redundancy in 'old style' SCNed IP500s. Nevertheless it only works only for Avaya H323 phones as mentioned earlier.

OK missed that part :)
Thanks.
