Hello,

My company is looking at linking two BCMs together over a WAN, one using a BCM 50 (version 2) and the other with a BCM 400 (4.0 software). I know that each location requires VoIP trunks and MCDN licenses, but I was wondering if SIP trunks can be used instead? The cost is about the same, our Nortel installer doesn't know much about SIP, but I figured that SIP is the way of the future so that would be the best option. Any suggestions?

You can use SIP in your scenario since the 50 is on R2 and the 400 is on R4. Not much difference in the programming. Pay attention to your URI maps and it's pretty straightforward.

You're right: go with SIP, it is the future and it's a much less chattier protocol.

Not a big fan of SIP just yet...there are still many issues with interop between vendors.

I have an End-to-End Nortel solution (2 BCM's with BES switches and all IP sets connected with a C221 at one side and a C1050 at the other) and I had to change out the SIP trunks for H.323 because one of the routers can't seem to handle the SIP even though the SIP ALG setting is on both sides.

H.323 is tried and true and works like a charm. It's easy to troubleshoot too.
