I have just upgraded my BCM400 from 3.7 to 4.0 and now am interested in getting a Cisco ata-186 to interface with it.

Here at our remote office, all we have are VoIP lines coming in off of a T1 from the BCM riding on our data network.

If I can get this ata186 working for fax line usage, I could save almost $3000.00 per month on POTS lines at various facilities.

It appears that the only issue I have remaining is the ata 186 actually registering with the BCM.

Has anyone got this to successfully work, or use another ATA with the BCM400 and 4.0?

Thanks,

Chris

Here is a copy of the communications between the phone and the BCM taken with prserv.exe:

IP sets use UniSTIM for registration. I don't think SIP sets are yet supported on BCM.

yes magnargp is right ...
SIP stations are not supported (ie they cannot get an extension number from the BCM)

At this time SIP Trunks to (only) BCM, CS and MCS series systems are supported

Thanks guys for sharing that information.

So, along those lines, is there ANY VoIP to analog adaptor that I can use to save me a lot of $$$$ on POTS lines? Remember: All I have are VoIP phones at this location. There is no direct access to the BCM so no digital sets with the ATA or analog cards to use.

Thanks,

You could use Unified Messaging to land your faxes at the main site in a mailbox...save you a ton of paper on junk faxes too.

Does anyone know if Nortel sells a conversion module for the IP sets like they used to with the TDM sets?

How about the Norstar VoIP gateway? I have used the unit with a butt set, interfaced it with a POTS set and run it into a Norstar. Sounds like it might do what you want.

Also a BCM50 with VoIP trunking and active analog station would work. If the savings are that great, you should have issue with ROI.

Unified Messeging is great for receiving faxes, but I have to send faxes as well. I also need to convert credit card terminals to use VoIP instead of the POTS lines.

The VoIP gateway is too much over kill plus high dollar for what needs to be done.

My 6 remote spots are tied back to the bcm via T1 lines. Only 2 users max at each of these locations. THey just need the analog lines for faxing purposes, that's where my big savings is going to be.

I haven't thought about using analog ports on a bcm50 and tieing that back to my bcm400 across my network. That would give me the local analog lines I need here at the corporate office.

With the fax messaging keycode, you can fax OUT from your desktops as well.

The problem is, a lot of our faxing requirements dictate a signature be applied. But, I would entertain a scanner be installed at a few locations.

But that still does not cover my requirements for non-fax analog lines.

I have one BCM 400 at one site and VOIP phones at another. I am using a VPN to run my i2004 phones for connectivity back to the BCM.

OK now stay with me here......

I am also using Linksys ATA's to run fax and cordless phones from analog ports off of the BCM.

Here is the explanation.....

At the BCM site I am using a linksys SPA-3102 that has 1 FXO port with an analog ext off of the BCM.

At the other end of the VPN at the remote site, I am using a linksys SPA-2102 that has 2 FXS ports to which I have a fax or cordless telephone attached.

What I have found is that you need 1 SPA-2102 and 1 SPA-3102 for each device you use. Although there is two FXS ports on the SPA-2102, I have not been successful in getting the second port to work off of another SPA-3102 FXO port.

I hope that I didn't lose you on that configuration. I am sure you could use these devices with Public address without a VPN but I have not tried it.

Here are the links for those devices. FYI, the tech support for those devices is very, very limited.

Good Luck

Well I've got both of those coming. Let's see what happens.

Thanks for the info.

I am not sure how you can get in touch with me because I can't post email, phone or any other contact on here. If you go to our website: you can get our phone number from there and call me. I will be happy to get more specific with you on these if you call.

Thanks,
Chad

Thanks Chad,

I'm going to take you up on your offer. I just got the 2 devices in Friday, mucked up a lot of settings, and am now ready to get serious about it.

Chris

Unfortunately at our remote sites we use Wyse thin slients due to the harsh environment ( concrete ready-mix plants).
