We recently upgraded from 6.5 to 7.0 and last week we tested our disaster procedure where we restore our last tape backup onto our backup server. Everything seemed pretty familiar but we hit a hitch when we tried to restore the master database - we got a message saying SQL Server had to be running in single user mode to perform this operation. Can anyone tell me how to switch to this fabled single user mode?

start the SQL server service with "-m" option. Refer BOL "single-user mode" for more info..

You can also change to and from single-user mode in Enterprise Manager, but once you have done so may find that EM often uses two connections to the database and will not function fully.

If you want to access the database tables whilst in single-user mode then run the query analyzer (mssql7/binn/isqlw.exe) directly.

You should also set your database to single-user mode if you have data corruption that you want to fix with a dbcc.
