I have an RS6000 44P Model 270 running AIX 5.1 that is trying to bind to an NIS server that is no longer on the network. I need to boot into single-user mode to disable NIS but can't figure out how to get there. There is no key on the front of the system to turn to service mode. I interrupted the boot sequence by pressing F1 and have been through the system management services. Can someone point me in the right direction?

have you tried shutdown -m?

This should take you out of multi-user mode (run level 2)and leave you at single user mode.

I can't even log into the system to issue a shutdown -m as it is hanging on attempts to bind to the old NIS server. I tried a boot -s from the OK prompt but it is still trying to bing to the old NIS server on bootup.

Try pressing F5 after you see the keyboard test and before the speaker test during boot. Then you should see an option for single-user mode.
